Since ancient times, man has constantly cultivated and hybridized the rose, in order to obtain new, ever more seductive species.

Remarkable for its beauty, form and fragrance, it possesses a complex symbolism that can be explained by its strong characteristics: it is at once the image of completed perfection, worthy of contemplation, that of fragility, due to its ephemeral flowering, and in this way also that of time passing, of eternal recommencement, since it has the gift of being reborn, of multiplying identically on the same rosebush.

So it's hardly surprising that poets have used her image to praise the mysteries of love, passion, beauty and the perception of time.

This notebook presents a selection of seven poems on the theme of the rose (from the 13th to the 20th centuries), all of which are eulogies and songs dedicated to the ideal it embodies.

Our selection includes an extract from Guillaume de Lorris's Roman de la rose, and poems by Pierre de Ronsard, Théophile Gautier, Victor Hugo, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Louise-Victorine Ackermann and Olivier Larronde.
