Literary art poster "Alfred Jarry, Ubu or the King's Game"
The literary art poster "Alfred Jarry: Ubu or the King's game" is printed by the association, in A2 format (59.4x42cm), on Litho Archiv Matt paper. It is published in 101 numbered copies, because 101 can be read in both directions: like Ubu, it is a palindrome of three characters! Each copy is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
Because the play Ubu Roi was originally written for the puppet theatre, the poster shows a simple stage flanked by red curtains, lit on each side by a candle and surmounted by a cartouche indicating the title of the play. In the background, as if part of the decor, the text of the first scene, laid out in the form of a "Gidouille" (egg-shaped spiral adorning the belly of Father Ubu), converges while shrinking towards the center, where the coveted crown of Poland is disappearing. Most of the black and white illustrations are original drawings by Alfred Jarry (“True portrait of Monsieur Ubu”; candles; Palotins).
The hypnotic feeling is created by the spiral, and also by Father Ubu seated on his rearing horse and carrying a long standard, on one side, and the Palotins holding hands next to their cannon on the other side, and brings the eye to the center...
We chose finally not to represent Mother Ubu, because we don't know what she looks like!
